The Amsterdam Treaty: a New Stage of the Institutional Reform of the EU

The author undertakes to analyze the Amsterdam treaty as the next step in turn towards the construction of a “united Europe”. It’s above all the institutional aspect of European integration that he is interested in, and so, as for the results of its “Amsterdam stage”, the author, in order to assess them, examines the said results from the angle of the changes the Treaty brought into the system of European Union institutions. Due to the difficulties and discrepancies that would every now and then come up between the member states, the author notes, the results of the proceedings of the Intergovernmental Conference proved not as impressive as had been expected. But, anyway, the member states confirmed their determination to realize the plans to amplify the EU, which will require further institutional, as well as other reforms.
