The Shadow Way of Life (A Sociological Self-Portrait of Post-Soviet Society)

The subject considered in the article the first part of which is published in this issue is the attitude of Russian society and of its different groups to corruption and shadow economy. Basing their analytical work on the materials of a special all-Russian sociological poll, the authors juxtapose the attitudes of three groups singled out on the basis of the degree of people’s inclination to being engaged in enterprise. The publication shows how often representatives of the said groups have to face corruption of officials; to what extent they are involved in different forms of shadow activities inherited from the Soviet epoch (illegal payment for medical, municipal, consumer services etc.) and how they react to the shadow practice in its new, post-Soviet variations, first of all to tax evasion by economy managers and common citizens.
